Mr. Thorne was born November 27, 1933 in Strong, Arkansas. Upon graduation from Strong High School (1951), Mr. Thorne honorably served his country for a tour of duty in the US Navy during the Korean War (1952-1956). After basic training in San Diego, California, Bert completed Airman Prep School training in Norman, Oklahoma. He completed his naval service in Jacksonville Naval Station, serving as an aviation electrician (AE3) in the Fleet Airborne Electronics Training Unit Atlantic (FAETULANT). Upon discharge, Bert returned to Arkansas, and worked for International Paper Company, in Crossett, where he had occasion to meet a young nurse, Amy (Nita) Garris.

The couple were married on January 8, 1959 and lived in Pine Bluff; during this time Bert became a member of the Freemasons while living in Pine Bluff. The couple moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1963 where Bert completed his Bachelor's Degree in Accounting at Louisiana State University (1965) while Amy worked as a nurse.

A position with the Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA), brought the couple to Marietta, Georgia. Mr. Thorne's career with the DCAA lasted until 1994.

Faith was essential to Bert, who was an active member of Piedmont Church for over 40 years. He joined Kiwanis Club of Marietta Golden K, in 1996. Bert was an avid reader and frequented Gritters Library in Marietta for many decades.

Mr. Thorne is survived by his wife of 58 years, Amy (Garris) Thorne, a son Michael (Lisa) and daughter Christy (Paul Jaffe), and two granddaughters, Maryn (10) and Liv (6) Thorne.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Grace Living and Tranquility Hospice for their care and support of Bert in his final weeks of life.

A memorial service will be held at Piedmont Church, Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Thorne's life can be honored by donations to the Cobb Public Library Foundation, Piedmont Church, or the charity of your choice.
