Mrs. Leila Duke Atkins, 72, of Marietta, passed away May 12, 2017 after a valiant battle with cancer.

Leila was born in Randolph, AL on July 10, 1944 to the late French Nabors and Idee Langston Duke. After her graduation from Bibb County High School, she moved to Montgomery, AL and began working as a secretary. During her time in Montgomery, Leila met Tommy Barnette Atkins, the love of her life. They married in July 1964, just days after her 20th birthday. Tom and Leila had many adventures together, living in Texas, New Jersey, Louisiana, and Miami, FL before settling in Marietta, GA to start their family. When her children were older, Leila worked for and retired from Delta Air Lines, and later Worldspan/Travelport in their Benefits departments. Leila was a talented seamstress, gardener, and decorator. She was known for her vibrant, happy, loving, and positive spirit. She loved to laugh. Family was everything to Leila, and her family, both immediate and extended, loved her dearly in return. She enjoyed the company of her two dogs, who were constantly by her side. Leila loved the Lord with all her heart, and her family takes comfort in knowing that He prepared a place for her in Heaven.

Leila was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters, one brother, and her beloved husband, Tom. She is survived by her daughter, Ammie (Tim) McGinley; son, Tommy Barnette Atkins, Jr.; grandchildren, Patrick and Libby McGinley (who called her "Mimi"); and brothers, Leslie (Ann) Duke of Calera, AL, Pat (Carolyn) Duke of Fairhope, AL, and Sam (Susan) Duke of Douglasville, GA. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate Leila's life will be held on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 11:00am in the sanctuary of Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends on Monday, May 15, 2017 from 6:30-8:00pm at H.M. Patterson & Son Canton Hill.
